Long Beach Gay, Lesbian Center Chooses New Executive Director

After a six-month search, The Center Long Beach serving the gay and lesbian community has a new director.
Last Thursday, the board announced that Kimberly Woods will become the executive director. Woods served on The Center’s board of directors from 2004 to 2006, including a stint as chair of the board.
A public school teacher and administrator, Woods currently is completing her doctorate of education at the University of Southern California.
“I’m thrilled about the opportunity to see The Center grow and develop, serving the needs of our large and diverse LGBT population here in Long Beach,” Woods said in a release. “The Center is on sound financial ground, we own our own building, and we are poised to provide even more needed services to our community.”
The Center has technically been without an executive director since the departure of Trip Oldfield left in 2005. Merrill Irving Jr. served as interim director for more than a year before leaving last July to pursue his own doctoral degree at USC. Finance Director Richard Lewis Jr. has served as interim director for the last six months.
The Center was incorporated in 1980 as One in Long Beach, Inc., and has provided a variety of health, service counseling and legal services for the last 27 years. While most of the emphasis in the 1980s and 1990s was on prevention and treatment of AIDS/HIV, The Center has broadened its reach in recent years to offer more diverse services.
Also Thursday, the new board leadership was announced. Ted Gottle is now board chair, Israel Rodriguez was named corporate secretary and Paul Sprague will continue as chief financial officer.
